Other proctological diseases:

  • anal fissure;
  • polyps;
  • vein thrombosis of the rectum;
  • sphincter incontinence (anal prolapse).

Proctological diseases are accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • pain, burning, or itching in the anus;
  • bloody discharge during defecation;
  • feeling of incomplete emptying of the rectum after defecation;
  • frequent urge to defecate.

The presence or periodic occurrence of these symptoms is a reason to get the advice of a proctologist.

For the timely detection of anus diseases and the last section of the rectum, an examination is performed by a hollow luminous tube – a proctoscope.

Proctoscopy (rectoscopy) is performed to identify pathologies such as:

  • acute and chronic hemorrhoids;
  • acute or chronic anal fissure;
  • rectal polyps;
  • intestinal vein thrombosis;
  • pararectal fistula;
  • intestinal cyst;
  • paraproctitis;
  • rectal cancer.

In addition, the procedure allows you to detect the cause of rectal bleeding, as well as take a tissue sample for cytological examination.

Preparation for proctoscopy

  1. 2-3 days before sigmoidoscopy, you should not eat heavy food (fresh vegetables and fruits, whole meal bread). You can use lean poultry, fish, meat, meat broths, cereals (except oatmeal, millet, pearl barley). Dishes – steam, stewed or boiled. A light lunch is allowed 1 day before the examination and only tea in the evening. In the morning before proctoscopy, you should not have breakfast.
  2. Before the examination, it is important to cleanse the intestines using the Fortrans laxative in accordance with the instructions for the preparation and in the morning of the procedure – a cleansing enema. Its volume at a time is not less than 1 liter. Perform an enema until clear water comes out.

The procedure requires preparation, which includes taking laxatives on the eve of the proctoscopy and a cleansing enema on the day of the procedure.

How is the procedure?

During the procedure, the patient lies on the couch on his side, with his legs pressed to the body. First, the doctor conducts a finger examination, the task of which is to identify the absence of obstacles and affected areas in the path of the proctoscope. To do this, the doctor inserts a lubricated finger into the anus, after putting on a glove. After a finger examination, a proctoscope is inserted. During the examination, the air is supplied to the rectal cavity for a more accurate diagnosis. This can cause a feeling of fullness in the intestines and a desire to have a defecation.

Usually, the procedure does not cause pain, but at the request of patients, it can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Proctoscopy is an absolutely safe procedure, in some cases, after it, there may be a slight blood discharge, which passes away on its own in 1-2 days. In very rare cases, after the procedure, the stomach may ache, as well as a burning filling or itching in the anus.

It is necessary to immediately inform the doctor about the occurrence of such symptoms after the procedure:

  • bloating;
  • an increase in body temperature above 38C;
  • profuse bleeding;
  • severe pain in the anus.

The procedure takes 10 minutes. The patient receives the examination results together with the doctor’s recommendations immediately after the procedure. If a biopsy was taken during the proctoscopy, the examination results will have to wait 5-10 days.

A proctoscopy can be prescribed by a proctologist after consultation. In some cases, the diagnosis may not be enough, in which case the doctor may prescribe a colonoscopy – a deeper examination of the rectum using an endoscope.
