About units

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a disease in which abnormal accumulation of lipids occurs in the liver. In other words, the tissues become covered with fat, and this interferes with the normal functioning of the organ.

Despite the frequent absence of mentioned symptoms in the early stages, the syndrome is a big threat to the patient’s health. In 75% of cases, its consequence is hepatomegaly – a pathological increase in the size of the liver, which is fraught with a considerable number of complications and even lead to cirrhosis. Therefore, NASH requires mandatory treatment. A patient with a confirmed diagnosis can participate in the Liver Hepatosis program of the Medical Clinical Research Center at the MC Healthy&Happy and get free access to the most modern medicines of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

What is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis?

What are the causes of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis?

Although liver disease is commonly associated with alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence is not necessary for the liver to degenerate and damage. The problem is usually caused by:

  • type II diabetes mellitus;
  • obesity;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • metabolic syndrome;
  • polycystic ovary disease;
  • hypothyroidism;
  • improper nutrition;
  • abuse of fatty foods.

At the same time, steatohepatitis can itself provoke the development of diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, sleep apnea syndrome, and other potentially life-threatening pathologies.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

In many patients, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis has a “silent” status, marked its presence only with weakness and rapid fatigue. In other cases, nausea in the morning hours, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, pain, and heaviness in the right hypochondrium, skin itching are added. In addition, since obesity is one of the important reasons for the development of steatohepatitis, many patients have an increased body mass index – more than 30. It is very simple to check whether this indicator is normal for you: you should divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. For example, the BMI of a person weighing 70 kg with a height of 170 cm will be 70 / 1.7 * 1.7, that is, about 24.2.

How is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis treated?

Patients with an officially NASH diagnosis are recommended a number of measures aimed at eliminating the causes of its development and risk factors. We are talking about a special diet and physical activity. Experts advise to reduce body weight, give up alcohol, and stop taking hepatotoxic medication. Subsequently, treatment with thiazolidinediones, antioxidants, vitamin E is added to the list mentioned above. If the listed measures do not give the expected result, there is a reason to join the perspective of innovative treatment and take part in the clinical research program.

How to become a member of the Liver Hepatosis Program?

Patients who have: can join nonclinical studies at Healthy&Happy ICDC:

  • absence of viral hepatitis and gallstone disease;
  • increase in liver function tests by 30%.

Why does the patient need informed consent?

Each patient who has become a member of the Liver Hepatosis program at the Healthy&Happy before starting a research, signs a special document – an informed consent, which gives access to all possible information about the medicines and the nuances of the program. The patient will learn everything about the effect of the medicines, possible side effects, as well as a complete list of medical procedures to be performed within the program. The document is prepared simply, without unnecessary terminology, so that the patient can understand all the details.
