About units

Many human diseases are closely related to the functional state of the brain. Therefore, in some cases, neuropathologists consider it necessary to observe what is happening with the functional state of the brain and prescribe electroencephalography (EEG).

EEG is prescribed for patients suffering from convulsions, loss of consciousness, dizziness, and frequent headaches. Also, this examination is recommended in the post-stroke period after a traumatic brain injury, as well as in chronic anxiety, depression, neurosis, panic attacks, and sleep or memory disorders.

It is advisable to get a brain examination if these diagnoses are:

  • migraine;
  • cervical osteochondrosis;
  • syndrome of vegetovascular dystonia;
  • hyperkinesis (involuntary twitching of arms, shoulders, frequent blinking).

In children, indications for an EEG are a need for a general assessment of brain development, as well are mental retardation, stuttering, hyperactivity, somnambulism, and a lag in language acquisition.

EEG allows you to detect the morphological features of brain structures, as well as the dynamics of the functioning of the cerebral cortex. With the help of this method, it is possible to assess the nature and degree of brain dysfunction, identify the focuses of damage in it and its location, to determine the degree of interaction between different brain structures.

In addition, encephalography allows you to control the effectiveness of treatment and acts as a clarifying diagnostic method when other types of research do not give a reliable picture of the disease, although the
symptoms indicate the presence of pathology.

Despite the brain is the most valuable human organ, EEG is an absolutely harmless procedure that can be performed as often as necessary.

How is electroencephalography provided?

Electroencephalography is performed in a separate room. A rubber cap is put on the patient’s head with electrodes attached to it, connected by wires to an electroencephalograph. The device amplifies the signals received from the sensors hundreds of thousands of times, records them in the computer’s memory, and displays a graphic image of the fluctuations in the difference in the bioelectrical potentials of the brain in the form of wave-like graphs. They are called electroencephalograms.

The procedure takes from 15 to 20 minutes.

The examination is provided by a doctor-functionalist. He describes the results and gives a conclusion. However, the final interpretation of the data and the diagnosis is the prerogative of the attending physician, who has at his disposal the patient’s medical history, as well as the results of additional examinations.

This study has no absolute contraindications. It can be passed by children and adults, older people, and even pregnant women. Unless it is necessary to postpone the diagnosis for a while if there is a cold or other disease in the acute stage, an open craniocerebral injury, or a fresh wound on the head.
